Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who does the money benefit?
A. The money from these plates will benefit New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, the Beginning Farmer Network of Massachusetts (BFN) and Mass Farmers Markets. When you register, it will state Third Sector New England as the beneficiary. They are the fiscal sponsor for New Entry and they will pass the money through to New Entry, BFN and Mass Farmers Markets. These organizations work with training beginning farmers, working to increase food access and develop strong farmers markets in the state. Collectively they are working to strengthen the Massachusetts food system.
Q. COST: How much will the Choose Fresh and Local plate cost me?
A. The plates cost $40 to purchase, and then $40 every two years when you renew your registration (in addition to your normal registration of $60). If you are putting these plates on an existing car, there is a one-time RMV assessment of $20 to process the conversion.
Q. Is the extra $40 tax deductible?
Q. SWITCHING: What if I have another Special Plate or vanity plate and want to switch; will it cost me the same assessments? Are there any savings?
A. The registration fee and special fee could be prorated depending on the expiration of your current plate.
Q. GETTING THE PLATES: Do I have to go to the Registry to pick up my Specialty Plate?
A. If you were part of the initial registrations (prior to January 2016) you will need to go to your designated branch to pick up your plates. If you are ordering online now, your plates will be shipped to your house.
Q. TIMING: Are the plates available now?
A. Yes! Please register online here if you have not already done so.
Q. CHOOSING A PLATE NUMBER: Can I choose a specific plate number?
A. Unfortunately, the plate number request process is no longer available. The registry will issue plates at random according to available inventory.
Q. LOW NUMBERS: What about low number plates?
A. After the initial round of plates have been processed at the registry, the low-number plates (1 through 99) will become available via auction as an additional fundraising opportunity for the sponsored charities. Please contact us if you would like to be placed on a list for low-number plates. For individuals who have already reserved a plate, you will also have an opportunity to bid on a low number plate and swap out your plate at a later date.
